Jan Armgardt - furniture fashioner

»Furniture fashioner« is what Jan Armgardt calls himself. Furniture has been featuring in his work since the beginning of his professional career:
Armgardt, born in 1947, was apprentice to a furniture builder. After this training he studied interior design before returning to the practical side of furnishing, working for upholsterers, metalworkers and joiners. Equipped with this solid craftsman’s background, Armgardt founded »Workshopdesign« together with a partner in 1971, and then »Armgardt zerlegbare Möbel«, both of which were companies that designed and distributed component furniture.

Since 1974 Armgardt has been a self-employed designer. Both his interior designs and experimental activities have found recognition.

It goes without saying that furniture plays a central role here too, as reflected in his paper furniture for »Human Touch« or the interior for the world’s most famous doll’s house — it was Armgardt who created »Barbie’s New Living Room« for the »Artists and Designers Form Barbie« project. Since 1998, Armgardt has been guest professor at Aachen technical college.
