Christophe Marchand – Calm understatement and technical perfection

Christophe Marchand was born in 1965, and is one of the successful younger generation of Swiss designers. After completing an apprenticeship as a carpenter, he studied at the Zurich School of Art and Design.

A freelance designer since 1993, Marchand has created an impressive range of products, ranging from watches to a high-tech office chair.

Driven by an insatiable curiosity for construction, innovative materials and new technologies, he develops his products from the inside out, in a manner of speaking.

Marchand aims to combine technical perfection with visual attractiveness.

The result is calm, understated objects that owe their lasting appeal to their high degree of functionality rather than an eye-catching appearance.

Christophe Marchand lives and works in Zurich, and teaches at the ECAL in Lausanne.

He has received numerous awards, and co-authored of the book Transfer – Recognition and Implementation together with Peter Erni and Martin Huwiller.
